Hello to all!!
It is nice in Austin this time of year. Can you believe they had to CANCEL the Capital 10K race last Sunday? Yep, the first time for cancellation. It was raining like a monsoon, at the start time at 8 a.m. My brother, Rick, who is 73, was going to run, but then with the bad weather, it was not going to happen.
Things are going fine with my job. I have been working on a Website project with another company that houses lots of agencies and orgs. that provide help to all. It is www.auntbertha.com
Our company has the internal site for our staff customized with some new features for us to use when we refer our members for help. I had a whole lot of training going on and a nice team meeting in SA last month, too. We even had time for bowling one night, which was fun.
I plan to get in touch with the tour group in Costa Rica soon. I should have some estimated costs and then a timeline with dates for deposit money, etc.
Mary, I was thinking of you and the birds. We have had so many soming to the feeders in our back yard.
So, it has been a year since we got together in April. Wow, time does move on--yep, and the earth is spinning.
I just think of ageing in place, and having wisdom. We all have had such varied lives, and it is good that we have stayed in touch, too.

Back from Florida Wildlife Adventure
Hello, Five Girl Farm’ers! Terry and I just got back from a road trip to Florida. It was perfect timing as winter has been particularly frigid/snowy this year in Kansas. We traveled down the Eastern seaboard all the the way to the Keys and then back up the Western Gulf side. Funny, the weather was unseasonably warm - - so I was sweaty, salty, greasy for most of the trip. Sounds like I’m complaining, but not really. Just a huge change. ☺️
I’m definitely “in” for Costa Rica, too; WE, I should say. Now, we’re excited about all the tropical birds that we’ll see in CR. The Florida wading birds were a real treat and I have a bajillion pics to prove it. Any kind of nature is the draw for me. On our many visits to FL’s Wildlife Reuges, we were always rewarded, surprised, and delighted by some “find.” The highlight of the trip was seeing a Manatee come cruising down the Crystal Springs River, following behind two kayakers. Surprise!
Funny: when we were at the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, literally down a dead end road - binoculars in hand looking for birds - a car pulled up beside us. The driver asked, “Is this the way to the 80-acre distillery?” I cackled out loud because I thought he was pulling my leg. But no, he was serious. After he left, Terry said “...maybe he misunderstood what *wildlife* meant...”. We had been to Key West and South Beach Miami and definitely had seen all kinds of wild-life. We’ve been cracking up about that ever since.
Debi, do keep me posted on your Austin trip. Don’t know if it’s in the cards, but I can certainly check it out.
Karen, thanks for all your good leadership on our CR trip! Really looking forward to it. Regarding your Fall trip, Yellowstone National Park is awesome. One of the best/weirdest places on on planet earth.
Peggy, how can you be 70? Time has just flown by. In my mind’s eye, we are still all young and perky. Now we’re well-seasoned, and well, still perky!

It's Still Winter in Chicago . . .
Greetings from Siber--I mean Chicago. The high today is 21 with a low of 0, and tomorrow it will be 16 with a low of 8. Tuesday gets a little better with a high 21 and a low of 9, and then on Wednesday it will be a balmy 28. Believe it or not, temps are relative and when it has been down in the single digits and below freezing for a while we have a tendency to take off our hats and gloves when it gets up in the 20s so we can enjoy the warmth. There is at least sun today so from inside I have the illusion that it is warm!
Karen, good news about your health and that's a great thing you are doing for your friend's granddaughter, but not surprising to me. I love the idea of hanging out on a Mayan Ranch in Bandera (I think my family went there before I was born - there is a photo of a very young Pete on a horse, and I know it was in Bandera so the place has held a mystique for me most of my life) and San Antonio sounds like a lot of fun, but I won't be able to make a trip to Austin at that time.
I will, however, be coming for a visit some time toward the end of May and would love it if those of us who are in Austin can get together (and if Mary decides to visit at the same time that would be great as well!). I'll post the dates as soon as I have booked my flight.
My niece Jill is coming to visit me at the end of April for a long weekend, and then my nephew Zach and his girlfriend are coming up the first week of May to see Hamlet at the Shakespeare Theater and then will do some sightseeing around the area. They will also be staying with me. That is just the push I need to get that bed for the spare room LOL.
I am definitely in for Costa Rica!

It's March already!!
Hello to all,
Had a Texas road trip for work all of February. First to El Paso, then to Corpus Christi, and McAllen, then back to El Paso and last week, Lubbock. Whew!! I was kinda tired of the travel but I even got to see the Bluebonnets coming out on the drive to Corpus Christi. So beautiful this time of year in Texas. I am still enjoying my job, but I have started to feel out the possibility of working maybe 25-30 hours or so for the next two years, until I decide on retirement. I want to serve as a mentor to the new trainers, and I am hopeful that my manage will see that as a positive note--and we can get HR on-board, too.
Still thinking I will start up a small cooking school for men, when I retire. Or, maybe join a tour group to feature Austin; Since I still love this city. Or, even do my own podcasts on great things in Austin and the surrounding areas. Hmm, so much to think about.
I hope ya'll have had some time to think of the C.R. trip next year. I am hopeful we can work it out and probably have to get firm commitments, and money down for the tour by Oct. or November this year.
I have a few things going on this summer. I have invited a dear friend's granddaughter from Philly, Gianna, to be with me in July. She is 12 and has been having some depression and school issues, but I am focusing on building up her spirit. She will attend a camp outside of Kerrville for one week and then the second week of July 15th, we plan to do some fun stuff together, maybe even a few days at the Mayan Ranch in Bandera and of course, a trip to San Antonio. If anyone wants to join us in July --let me know. It is a great dude ranch with many activities for the kids, and a pool and horses to ride.
Brad and I are thinking we want to go to a national park in the U.S., but looking at Glacier or Yellowstone--but that would be in Sept. or Oct.--but not sure of dates, yet.
My physical was last week, and all was fine, but need to focus on losing some weight. Always a challenge, but I know I just have to commit, plan out the meals and keep walking.

Hello and Happy New Year to all!!
Well, we are having a "cold Front" in Austin, around 32 degrees which is a big change for us from the 70's we were having. Ha, ha. I know in Debi and Mary's world that is no big deal, but hey for us it is. I had to cover lots of potted plants to keep them safe.
I had been in San Antonio last week to teach a class and now in Austin this week. Whohoo, holiday on Monday, MLK day. Also I am headed to El Paso at the end of the month for a class and Corpus Christi in Feb.
Just wanted ya'll to know that I am still thinking of Costa Rica for next year. The best way to do this tour would be to use a travel group that my brother uses for his Baylor Univ. Students. Tropical Expeditions is a great group and they provide the transportation and guides, and cover hotels and most meals. Check it out at https://www.costaricaguides.com/vacation-packages/tropical-expedition-with-manuel-antonio
You can see that the basic tour starts at $975 (air tixs are extra) for 8 days and 7 nights. It is extensive with a chance to see San Jose, Beach areas, as well as Arenal volcano. Let me know if that is a good plan for ya'll. I think we can get a better deal if we know that at least 8 are going, for sure. This is the double rate for rooms, but if you want a single room, it's a bit higher. Of course, we can add on extra days in a specific area,if you want to--and that is your choice. This travel group can customize if we want to add extra days, or just do on your own, as desired. ( I would suggest an extra day in Manuel Antonio area or at least take a catamaran trip to Tortuga Island--really cool.)
Driving in C.R. is crazy even for seasoned people--so do not suggest that at all, unless you are in the beach areas. Many roads in the city are not named, so again an issue to find your location. Uber is available everywhere, so no problem there.
I suggest going in Late Jan. or Feb. since that is Dry season and considered off season for tourists.
That should give us a good leeway to save up and look at air fare rates. Southwest flys from Houston San Jose as well as United and American Airlines.
Update: Brad is now the bass player for EXTREME HEAT. Do you remember that band from the 70s and 80s? Well, they are still pumping it out in clubs in Austin. Great music.

Retire-cation musings
Hi ya’ll! Woke up this morning to a winter wonderland. More snow expected to fall throughout the day. Terry and I are cozy inside with no plans to leave the house. Someone has already scooped the sidewalks and front porch.
We will use this time to finalize our next road trip to the Florida Keys in February. It’s fun to plan a sunny get-away while we enjoy the pretty snow covered view outside. The joy of retirement: enjoying the rhythm of the seasons and going with the flow. I am soooooo grateful.

I got to listen to a live Stream of a Christmas music Show from Blue Rock Ranch/Studio last night. They featured Carrie Rodriguez (violin), Roscoe Beck (bass) and Erin Ivey (singer) and Billy Crockett (guitar). All great singers and musicians.

Just been baking some Christmas cookies, ginger molasses, Sandies and Biscotti. I love em but most are to be given as gifts. I still need to make some pumpkin and carrot bread, too.
I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday season. It brings happiness and time to share with family and friends. We are lucky to have my nephew and his wife, Ben and Liz, with us and their two boys, Aaron (8) and Austin (10). Should be fun to show them AUstin. They are moving back to Alburqurque, NM, sine Ben is still with the Railroad there.
And of course, when I look back at this year, I am remembering our wonderful time in April for the Reunion. It was special and fun. I remember the great times at 5 Girl Farm christmas.
I am still enjoying my work at Superior Health Plan as a trainer. I have a class next week in San Antonio but only 3, so should be nice. I get to see the lights on the RiverWalk, too.

Thanksgiving thoughts
I was remembering one of our Thanksgiving's at 5 Girl Farm. Do you remember we were cooking turkeys and forgot to take out the packet of giblets and the neck? Ha, ha. I think I called my mom and she was like, well, that's o.k. just throw it out.
I know we had lots of extra people one year for Thanksgiving. I found a photo of my Dad too, since his birthday is Nov. 27th, we combined with TDAy, at the farm.
I do like the pies and desserts, but this year, I could not eat that much, just did not want the sweets. I am grateful for all the friends and family that are close to my heart.
Hope you all have a wonderful December. It is nice in Texas, warmer temps but a few cold spells, too.
I am going to some of the Farmer's markets and decided to give all home-made things to my sisters this year. There is a stand that sells yaupon extract to make tea, very good to drink hot or cold. I also love local honey and candles made with soy.

October, pumpkins and spices, love it!
This time of year always is my favorite, with all the leaves, colors, and just changing of seasons.
Yes, I know in Texas it is not much of a change, but for us, getting below 60, is a treat.
I love to bake pumpkins bread or muffins and just enjoy the outdoors, too.
I've been busy at work, with classes and meeting new hires from all over Texas. I do like the interactions and finding out what they are interested in--and their families. That's what keeps me thinking young, I do believe.
We have Formula One race coming to Austin and Austin City Limits concerts, and it's a big deal in town. I have my friend from Costa Rica arriving on Oct. 17th and he stays over til the next week and loves to enjoy the race at COTA track. This is his 6th year to attend the F1 race, and he is a big fan. My brother, Rick, is coming and nephew, Evan.
I am not that into the race, so I think since my birthday is Oct. 20th, I might go to San Antonio and have a ladies weekend with a few friends. We plan to relax, get massages, and mani/pedis and have some good meals and wine.
This weekend I have the 15th birthday party and dance for my neighbor's daughter, Dayanarra. The Quincinera is a big deal in their family and it will be fun.
Hoping ya'll are all safe and enjoying cooler temps--and the color of changing leaves.
I also got the set of Harper Lee's books, To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman. I am reading and enjoying them both. TKM--always one of my favs.

FGF Pals, I can't believe it! I finally did it, thanks to Debi who knows all in the world of technology as far as I'm concerned! Thanks for your patience, Debi!
After 40+ days of triple digit heat, we have now had about 2 weeks of constant rain. Your photos from Costa Rica whetted my appetite for our next reunion, Karen. Looking forward to it!
My grandson, Harrison, has had what I call "hoof and mouth" disease. Really "hand, foot, & mouth," and so disgusting. Red bumps with clear blisters and Thrush for good measure in the mouth. The only thing good about this is that I got to spend an inordinate amount of time with him over the past few weeks while mom and dad went to work. So much fun! Even though he was not in a very good mood for a few days, after the initial viral infection, he was in the best mood. Watching him absorbing all the world has to offer is such a blast!
Karen, let me know when Brad has a local gig that you are attending. Would love to see you!

Yep Finally September
Hi, all,
I just love the fall time of year. It is my favorite, since I do have a birthday coming in October. Ah, well, another good year.
I have been busy with work, just seems like I have one class after another but now I have time to do some editing and revision to our curriculum. We have a training summit this week on Th. and Friday, so it will be nice to visit with other trainers in our company.
We finally have rain in Texas. It was such a long, hot summer but now the rain and cooler temps. are on the way!! I can't wait to start baking zucchini and pumpkin breads. Love the spices and the taste, too.
Brad is busy with gigs and rehearsals, but he is enjoying the extra time for other projects, too.
I had a follow up C-scope done a week ago. My gastroenterologist MD wanted to double check and area of interest from last year. But all was fine, and I was relieved. As they say, the prep is worse than the procedure, and it's true.
Still trying to get in my walks each day, and have lost about 15 lbs. over the summer. Don't know how, except cutting out carbs was key for me and not eating sweets, too.
You know I miss all of you, and we do need to catch up by using the blog space.

Back in the Land of the Living
Well, I am very late to this party but I hope you had a great time in Costa Rica, Karen. I'm with Mary - it looks beautiful and I am ready to go!
I have spent the past few months preparing for and moving from my apartment of 28 years to my new apartment. It was both exhilarating and stressful going through everything and deciding what to keep and what to toss. It was also liberating to get rid of so much clutter.
I am glad you and Terry are settling into your new house, Mary. It sounds like you have a lot of folks interested in Terry's old house and from the pictures I can see why. It looks beautiful and I'm sure you'll have no trouble selling it.
My move itself went smoothly, even in the pouring rain (!). I have been spending the past few weeks getting to know my new neighborhood, which I love. Although I am close to a busy avenue, the trees on my street act as a blanket and I do not hear the traffic. I am close enough to the train that I can hear it, but it is a gentle rumbling with faraway bells and not at all intrusive. In fact, I kind of like it as it reminds me of the train that we could hear in the distance back when I was a kid in Houston. It's funny how those old memories can rise up to the surface so easily.
I still have a lot to do here. I got rid of most of my old furniture and have not replaced much yet. But my bedroom, the kitchen, the bathroom, and the small room I am using as my office are done enough for me to live in comfortably while I take my time finishing up the rest. We are finally having some beautiful summer weather and I want to take advantage of it since it disappears so quickly so I probably won't do much more until the fall.
Well that's it for me. What's going on with everyone else?

Upheaval and unearthing in KS
Well it’s taken two months, but we finally put Terry’s house on the market. We have been de-junking, organizing, cleaning, and finishing 5-years of “deferred maintenance “ projects. Ha! We’re almost down to one house. Yay! Our realtor posted the listing online yesterday at 11:30 and we had 17(!) showings booked before bedtime. We are staying at the new house now and we cooked our first meal here last night. Feels like home!

Hi, all!! Well, getting excited about heading to Costa Rica on Friday. Yes, 10 days in C.R. and just ready to relax and enjoy the sights. I am glad to be going with Brad and we can have time to visit "family" and friends. We have such a good time together, and we really do take time to chat and just enjoy being together.
We are staying with Juan Carlos Lacle and his wife (Martiza) and daughter in San Jose, and then going on a beach trip with Max, Lilli and their two sons: Tomas and Matias. Also, Marita (sister to Maritza) will go with us since we are staying at her family's apt. in Jaco. It is their weekend getaway, so to speak.
We are planning to be in Jaco, C.R. which is a nice beach town for 3 nights and then take a catamaran cruise to Tortuga Island on Thursday, next week. Then, probably watching the World Cup and back to San Jose the final weekend.
I had been busy with some classes but now a great time for a break. It is actually cooler in C.R.--in the upper 70s, and of course, rainy season. Wow, that will seem nice compared to our almost 100 temps in TX.
I am planning to fill up one suitcase with coffee to bring home, love that coffee. Also, will be checking out local crafts, too. I will be thinking of our trip in 2020, and things we might want to see and do.
Hope you are all doing fine and enjoying the summer. I had a nice lunch with Nicki last Friday, and we spent lots of time just chatting, right....and catching up.

Hi Five-Girl-Farm'ers! I finally figured out that logging in to this site, is easier on my computer (rather than iPhone). Now I have signed up for the notifications, too. Yay!
Karen, you mentioned a get-together next year to discuss the Costa Rica trip. That sounds great. You mentioned possibly vising Kansas, and I second that. The Kansas City - Country Club Plaza, for instance - is a pretty cool area, with lots of shopping, hotels, theaters, and restaurants -- all within walking distance. Kind of a destination vaycay place. And there are usually good fares on SWA from Austin/Chicago to MCI (KC airport and the Plaza are technically/actually in Missouri; we like to confuse people. Ha!). Terry and I moved all my stuff from Lawrence to the new house in Topeka. Now we are de-junking, cleaning-up, and getting ready to put his house on the market. So then we can actually live in the new house. What a concept. Many boxes marked for garage sale. Many bags of clothes delivered to GoodWill. So much left to do, but we're getting there. He's been in his house for 22 years. Right now we are sorting through all the kids' toys, games, and what nots. Lots o' stuff.
Thinking of you all and what a great time we had at the Reunion! Would love to do see you guys next year. Also, here's a standing invitation to visit Kansas and stay with us once we actually get moved-moved. I sincerely mean that!!

💖😅 Hi, to all,
Well, another Sunday, and I like to have time to write when it is quiet. We are waiting on rain here in TX. We need it, so no complaining. I am just glad it is coming down today.
Brad is supposed to play at the outdoor patio at Guero's today but who knows, if the rain comes, they will probably cancel that.
We had dinner guests last night, Daisy and her husband, Daniel. Daisy is one of my neighbor's daughters. She is studying Bi-lingual edu. at TX STate Univ. She is so happy and works PT at James Avery in Barton Creek Mall. Her husband, is an HVAC specialist and of course, this is his busy season. They are so young, 22--and it is great to be able to visit with them, and hear of their future plans.
Always makes me reflect on our ages when we were at 5 Girl Farm. I still feel some of the same thoughts about life, and I hope I never lose my desire to do good, and spread kindness in this world, and have a good time--along the way!
I had a special treat last weekend. Bobby Arnold invited me out to see the Blue Rock Ranch and recording studio, outside of Wimberley. Great place, with a huge recording facility, and many famous people have recorded there, including Lyle Lovett, etc. The studio and house are owned by a great couple that like to give back to the community by hosting concerts, and live stream of the music, too. Bobby used to take his TX State Students there to help with their recording tech. class--and I am sure it was a great experience. It is on a ridge overlooking a small stream, and the mountains over Wimberley, there's a pool, too. Wow, it was fun to just be able to see it and enjoy the afternoon there.
I was pulling into my driveway on Sat. and saw a huge roadrunner, with a lizard in his beak. He was surprised and so was I, so I got outta the car, but then he took off with his prize. Wow, usually you don't see them in the city.
I am thinking of holding off to retire until May of 2020, since then I can have all debt paid off and also collect my bonus $$.
Let's plan a get together for early 2019, so we can plan the Costa Rica trip, O.k.? I want to get your likes/dislikes, etc. We could meet up in Dallas, or Kansas, or somewhere else....any ideas?

💗💞Just up early on a Sunday, like we talked about at the reunion, I like to get up and have my coffee and sit on the patio with the cats. They love to be outside in the morning. I like my quiet time with them and giving my mind a break, too.
Can't believe it is Mother's Day already. Wow, I was remembering my mom and how we used to talk and just enjoy being together. She always had a great love of life and towards the future. She had great adventures in her life, and I guess that is where I get my spirit from, her bloodline. Vikings always were adventurous people and that combined with water in any form, and there you go.....
I have to head to San Antonio this afternoon, since I am covering a class on Monday for a fellow trainer. She is a single mom, Anna, and from McAllen area. She has 3 boys and I thought she should be able to stay longer on Monday before heading back to SA. I will handle Monday for her, so she does not have to rush back to town.
Brad and I are going to Nan and Tom's this morning to have brunch made by their daughter, Laura. I am bringing fixings for mimosas. I also read about how to freeze individual ice sections with champagne or prosecco with fruit--strawberries and add them to the drink, as you serve. Sounded good to me. I also found a great way to have Prosecco in the summer, just pour some in a glass and add a fruit popsicle or any thing you prefer and it chills and keeps the drink cold.
So, I have been getting in my 5,000 steps a day, and it really does wonders, for sure.
Also, added Evening Primrose oil capsules to my regime, along with Fish oil. EPO is great for skin (especially acne or psoriasis--which I have) and heart healthy as well as for our lady parts, and arthritis along with osteoporosis. Like a wonder supplement. I used to take it before for anyone who has bad PMS, it is fantastic!! If you take it just do 1,000 mg. a day until your body is used to it, and then you can double it, if you want to, per day.

Just a few thoughts
I know, it's early, but I had to get up to feed the cats and let them outdoors. It is the beginning of the summer months and now, I am getting all kinds of dreams about 5 Girl Farm and just how I felt back in the day. Actually, it's not that different from how I feel now. Don't care for the heat as much, but I do remember how much fun we had with the pool, and friends at the farm. We did know how to get people together to enjoy the outdoors and just enjoy life. I don't ever want to forget that wonderful feeling--of people being close and open.
One of the best times at the reunion was when I was in the kitchen and almost everyone was around the table, and I could hear your voices. Such a wonderful sound of laughing and talking--and it was magical. Each person with their voice, and knowing each other as we all do. I think our shared lives and love and all the things we have experienced have added to that moment. I cannot tell you how much you all mean to me--let's always stay connected.
